Head of Hooch

The “Head of the Hooch” is one of the largest head races in the United States. It is sponsored by both the Atlanta and Lookout Rowing Clubs.  The City of Chattanooga plays a supportive role in making the regatta a prestigious and successful event.

Started in 1981 on the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta, it later moved to Lake Lanier in Gainesville, GA. As the event grew the Atlanta Rowing Club approached Lookout Rowing Club and the City of Chattanooga to explore their interest in having the event here. There was overwhelming support.

Since the regatta moved to Chattanooga in 2006 the participant level has doubled. Today, there are approximately 2000 entries and 10,000 participants. The economic impact to the City of Chattanooga is estimated over $5,000,000/year.
